The History of Thailand

The history of Thailand, or The Kingdom of Thailand, dates back to prehistoric ages when human communities flourished in this delta and evolved into various kingdoms of rich cultures and traditions over time and eventually Thailand. Early Period: Archeological evidences discovered in many areas throughout Thailand suggest that human communities have thrived here since some 6,000 years ago. Lawah, Mon, and anchient Khom tribes are some of the early communities that later founded the Kingdom of Lopburi where the Lopburi province are now.

Sukhothai Period: In the early 13th Century, when the Kingdom of Lanna prospered in the north, a group of Thai people residing in the land of Khom established an independent state of Sukhothai. The Kingdom of Sukhothai was an absolute monarchy first ruled by Phra Ruang or King Indhrathit. The political center of the kingdom was at the present Sukhothai province.
Ayudhaya Period: In 14th Century, the Thai people around the lower Chai Phraya area gathered and founded a new Kingdom ruled by King Ramathibodhi I, or King U-thong. The Kingdom conquered much of the surrounding kingdoms, including Sukhothai, as its tributaries and expanded as far as the present-day Indochina peninsular, Malaya cape, Penang, and Singapore.

Thonburi Period: By the late 18th Century, with the fall of Ayudhaya, Phraya Tak gathered 500 troopers and fought his way out of the city. He raised up the troops in Chantaburi and retook Ayudhaya from Burmese conquest in the same year. However, Ayudhaya was so devastated it could not be restored. So he established Thonburi the government center during his reign.

Rattanakosin Period: After the establishment of Thonburi, the economy suffered badly from the long running battles and the reunification efforts. In 1782, Phraya Chakri, the supreme general who had fought alongside King Taksin the Great after the fall of Ayudhaya, took the reign as King Phuttayodfa Chulalok, the First King of Chakri Dynasty.
